After consulting with the hotel staff, I decided to send back all the motorcycle gear to the states. I loaded the panniers, my helmet, rain gear, back rest, bungee cords and small carrier for over the gas tank into the duffle I brought them all in, and headed for the central post office, a 47,000vnd cab ride away. I had no idea of what to expect. I walked into a beautiful rotunda with 100 foot (?) open ceiling. There was one person being served. There was beautiful artwork on the walls and crafts for sale along the side. When it was my turn I showed the bag and said "me" which is my best pronunciation of the word for the USA. I was handed some forms to fill out which had English translation under the vietnamese for most of the blanks. The hotel had sent a bell boy on a scooter to buy a small lock (27,000) for the duffle, so the bag was locked. The post office employee motioned for me to open, and then also to open the cases and she then wrote down the Vietnamese word on the customs form for each thing I had listed in English. They then found an old box and packed everything in the box (the duffle and lock not being used), then taped up the box, applied the label and tied up with rubber strapping. 20 minutes later and 1,27500 vnd later I had a receipt and was flagging a cab to take me to my next adventure- trying to get my hair color fixed!! I did not receive special service- another guy brought in a clear glass jar filled with what looked like little cakes about a foot high and 6 inches in diameter and they proceeded to wrap it up, find a box etc. Amazing service. I also took out my iPhone and opened the calendar and moved the cursor forward to try to find out approx how long it would take for the box to arrive....I'll let you know in 3 months if their estimate was accurate!
