Crossing the border
Despite the ramshackle buildings, leaving Laos was quite official. I would have never found the immigration office unless Cae had showed me. There had been some concern about getting there in time which is why we left so early. I did laugh at the sign requiring a $1 fee for immigration services between 4-5pm ! I then grabbed the "ferry" (5000kip) and minutes later was across the Mekong in Thailand. The word "ferry" was one of the reasons uncoils not find the immigration office as it was supposed to be located next to the ferry dock. I had in mind something like the Island Queen ferry from Falmouth to Martha's Vineyard- needless to say my vision was off base (see photo).
